Physical/Sensory Therapy Room Campaign
Growing up with a developmental disability can mean great difficulty in areas others might take for granted, down to the simplest act of receiving a human touch. In many cases, children with disabilities spend most of the day indoors, without much movement, which further hinders their development. In the years since Supporting Alternative Solutions began, we have worked with hundreds of children and adolescents who suffered from discomfort, confusion, anxiety, and even pain through their underdeveloped sensory cues. We listened to the stories of families, caretakers, staff, volunteers and our residents, who asked for a safe place to bring the world to children who cannot experience it as other children do. The Physical/Sensory Therapy Center will be a creative and stimulating space, staffed with professionals, and outfitted with high-tech equipment focused on physical strengthening and recreational movement.
Although the Physical/Sensory Therapy Center will primarily benefit the residents of our Community Homes, we will extend its use to other nonprofits and organizations that serve children with developmental disabilities. Designed by an occupational therapist, this vital Center is the only one of its kind in San Diego County, and will serve over 100 individuals ages 0-18 each year. Sensory stimulation and exercise will give multiple visual, auditory, and tactile cues to support and increase physical awareness and improve children’s abilities to perceive the world around them.
